CHINATOWN, SAN FRANCISCO — Portsmouth Square, a longtime gathering place often called Chinatown’s living room, is closed for a major renovation intended to reshape one of San Francisco’s oldest civic spaces.
What the city is building
According to the city’s June 2026 groundbreaking announcement, the approximately $73 million project will include a new community clubhouse, expanded playgrounds, flexible performance and gathering space, new trees and landscaping, accessible connections and an improved relationship between the plaza and adjacent streets.
The Recreation and Park Department’s project page describes an approximately 8,500-square-foot clubhouse, adult fitness equipment, new seating and changes to the underlying garage. Construction began in June 2026, with the park expected to reopen in mid-2028.
What is closed now
Portsmouth Square itself and its public restrooms are closed for renovation. This does not mean all surrounding streets, shops or the Portsmouth Square Garage are closed. Nearby public recreation alternatives listed by the city include Betty Ann Ong Recreation Center, St. Mary’s Square, Willie ‘Woo Woo’ Wong Playground and Woh Hei Yuen Playground.
Why the redesign matters
The square has served generations of Chinatown residents as an informal social center, a venue for activities and a place for older adults and families to meet. Changes to shade, seating, play space and accessibility have direct neighborhood significance, but completion and opening dates remain estimates that can change with construction conditions.
Residents can subscribe to project updates and raise construction-access concerns through the official project website.
